The Mystery Of The Ark Of The Covenant

When the Ark of the Covenant comes to my mind, I think of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark movie. This film was released in 1981.

The Ark of the Covenant is a very interesting object in the Bible because of its power described, but there are only bits and pieces about the Ark. When we read the Bible we get a story told down through the generations. That story might have been changed or lost over time. Like the game whisper down the lane. When I read the passages about the Ark of the Covenant many questions come to mind.

Before I get into the mystery of the ark, let me describe what the ark was, how big it was and what it was made out of.

This what the Ark of the Covenant would look like next to a human.

The ark was a rectangular box (’ārôn) made of acacia wood, and measured 2½ x 1½ x 1½ cubits (i.e. c. ×½ x 2½ feet or c. 1.22 m x 76 cm x 76 cm). The whole was covered with gold and was carried on poles inserted in rings at the four lower corners. The lid, or ‘mercy-seat’, was a gold plate surrounded by two antithetically placed cherubs with outspread wings.

Was the ark in Egypt before Moses took it out?

According to the Bible, it looks like it was not in Egypt before Moses left there with the Israelites. The first mention of the ark is in Exodus 25:15. However just because It is not written in the bible doesn't mean that it wasn't in Egypt.

An interesting clue shows up that makes one wonder if the story of the ark is all there.

This tomb is located in the Biggest Pyramid in Giza. Why is it so important is that the Ark of the Covenant could fit inside of the tomb. The inside dimensions of this tomb are the same as the outside dimensions of the Ark of the Covenant. Hmmm?

If it was in Egypt what were the Egyptians doing with The Ark of the Covenant?

What was in the Ark that gave it power was it just the presence of God or was it a form a technology?

Did Moses steal the Ark from the Egyptians, or was it divinely giving to him because the Egyptians were using the Ark for evil?

What happened to the ark after Babylon invaded Jerusalem?

Is The Ark of the Covenant still around today?
There are many possibilities.

These are just a few questions, but I am sure there is more. In this post, I will attempt to better understand the mystery of the Ark of the Covenant. Stay tuned for more...

Is the God of the Bible Omnipotent

According to dictonary.com

Omnipotent when used as adjective
1. almighty or infinite in power, as God.

2. having very great or unlimited authority or power.

However, Is the God of The bible:

I will start with the question Is God all knowing?

Let me begin with Genesis. God creates two trees the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Then God creates man (Adam) and then God creates Eve out of Adam and she becomes a woman. According to the Bible, God creates a serpent that He allows into the Garden. Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made, And he said to the woman, So the serpent was allowed into the garden as well. I will call the serpent the Maniac. Here is my question, If God knew that the serpent would tempt Eve into eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil making them fall, then why would he have let it allow to happen in the first place.

A paradox is similar to this situation. The question is If you create a time machine, go back in time before you created the time machine while taking a gun with you and kill your past self, would you ever have created the time machine to go back in time to kill yourself?

Maybe God is not all knowing, Maybe here in the garden, he was over confident in his children thinking they would not disobey Him. But this makes it seem that God did know that Adam disobeyed Him. Starting in Genesis 10: So [Adam] said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself.” And [God] said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” Adam never said that he ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Somehow here God already knew what Adam and Eve did. Notice how God talks to Adam in the form of a question. God did not say Why have you eaten from the tree which I commanded you not to.

What happened In The Gaden Of Eve?

What really happen in the garden of Eden? Do we take the account of Genesis and leave it at that?

Why would God put the Tree of knowlege of good and evil in the garden?

Why would God create a serpent more cunning than Adam and Eve were?

Did God give enough infomation to Adam not to disobey God?

These are just a few question I will look at on my next up coming post of Mysteries of The Bible

The Trinity Mystery

Is God a Trinity? How can this be? How can God be one but still three persons at the same time?

Most of you will find it interesting that the word "Trinity"  is found nowhere in the Bible.

Then why do all of us recognize God as three persons, God the Father, Jesus the son and the Holy Spirit?

Before I go on I must admit that I am unable to fully grasp this concept. God is much greater than I am but I will try to attempt this ever ongoing subject of much debate.

The King James Bible Mystery

The King James Bible is the Grandfather of all Bibles dating back to 1611 and is still used till this day. It is one of the early English translation of the Bible and also one of the most mysteries Bible’s around…

Before I begin with the mysteries let’s take a look at the history of the King James Bible

The Authorized Version, commonly known as the King James Version, King James Bible or KJV, is an English translation of the Christian Bible by the Church of England which begun in 1604 and completed in 1611. First printed by the King's Printer Robert Barker, this was the third official translation into English. The first was the Great Bible commissioned by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishop's Bible of 1568. In January 1604, King James VI of Scotland and I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England.

James gave the translators instructions intended to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the Episcopal structure of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy. The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England. In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible – for Epistle and Gospel readings – and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament. By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version was effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English speaking scholars.
This translation or mistranslation makes me laugh. If you look in

Acts chapter 12 verse 4:
Acts 12:4
And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

The word Easter shows up. Which is translated from the Greek word pä'-skhä or  pascha which means, the paschal feast, the feast of the Passover, extending from the 14th to the 20th day of the month Nisan. Not the holiday where the bunny comes to bring you candy, sorry kids.

Only one time in the whole Book of Acts and the whole King James Bible does Easter pop up. It’s like seeing Passover seventy times and getting used to it, then finding Easter in the Book of Acts. It is almost like finding an Easter egg. Maybe that’s why they put it in there….who knows? It's a mystery...

This mistranslation is more serious one in 1 John 5:7-8
(KJV)  For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Now in the (NIV84) For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
Notice anything different? The passages from the (NIV84) are different from the King James Version.

Even more interesting the latter part of verse 7 and the first part of verse 8 did not appear in the Greek texts for the first 1,000 years after scriptures were completed. Around 500 A.D. this portion appeared in the Latin version known as the Vulgate. Apparently the insertion was an attempt to bolster the then-controversial belief in the Trinity: The Father, the Word (which is Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. None of the Greek Manuscripts of the New Testament up to the year 1300 A.D. contain these words. “The textual evidence is all against 1 John 5:7. Of all the Greek manuscripts, there are only two which contain it. These two manuscripts are very late dates, one from the fourteenth or fifteenth century and the other from the sixteenth century. Both clearly show this verse to be translated from Latin” (Neil Lightfoot, How We Got the Bible, 1963 pp. 57-58)
Apparently monks who copied the Greek New Testament text in the 14th or 15th century add this verse from the Vulgate. Even the Catholic Jerusalem Bible admits this verse is not authentic and has left it out. Notes in the Jerusalem Bible explain that this was a marginal note in one of the copies of the Vulgate that was added to the late Greek manuscripts already mentioned.

And now for the biggest mystery in the King James Bible is, drum roll, please…The word  Hell

Hell shows up 54 times in the King James Version

Here are all the passages with “HELL” in, starting from Old Testament to New Testament.

Deuteronomy
32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

14:9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
28:15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
28:18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
57:9 And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.

Ezekiel
31:16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.
31:17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
32:21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
32:27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

Amos
9:2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:

Jonah
2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

Habakkuk
2:5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:

The word hell in the Old Testament is translated from the Hebrew word: sheh·ōle' or sheol. Which means "the grave"

On to the New Testament

The Hebrew View of the Universe

Matthew
5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Mark
9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

Luke
10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

1.    ge'-en-nä or Gehenna
2.    hä'-dās or Hades
3.    tär-tä-ro'-ō or tartaroō

Shakespeare in the King James Bible…?
It’s a remarkable fact that Shakespeare, arguably the greatest playwrights of all time, was in the employ of King James when The King James Bible, was being prepared. It’s an even more remarkable fact the Shakespeare turned 46 the same year the King James Bible was completed (1611). Why is this Remarkable, you ask? Well if you go to Psalm 46 in the King James Bible (and this only works in the King James Bible) and count 46 words from the beginning of the psalm you come to the word shake. Then if you count 46 words from the end of the psalm, you come to the word spear.   If you don’t believe me see for yourself.

Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most high. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.  He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Why all the mysteries in the King James Bible? Maybe it was to put the translators stamp on it. Maybe it is used for code language. Maybe it was their belief that made them put the translations in, or maybe they are human with a 1% error. Nobody really knows why all these different textural occurrences happen. One thing does remain the King James Bible is a mystery…

I hope you enjoyed Mysteries of the King James Bible.

Where is Enoch?

In this section I will discuss about Enoch the prophet in the Old Testament. I find this person to be one of the most interesting characters in the Bible because there is so little about him. I will use the tools I have and some books I read to find out more about him. Let’s take a look.

In most Bibles, Enoch is mentioned five times (in five different chapters in the Bible) with the exception of the (King James Version) Enoch is only mentioned in four chapters.

Enoch in The New International Version 1984
Genesis 4:17-18 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

Genesis 5:18-24 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.  And after he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.  Altogether, Jared lived 962 years, and then he died. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

1 Chronicles 1:1-4 Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah. The sons of Noah: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
Note: Enosh and Enoch are not the same person. In the King James Bible Enoch is taken out of passage three. Why would the translators do that? Are they trying to hide something…?

Luke 3:37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan,

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

Jude 14-16 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
Note: Jude had to know something or read about Enoch to write this in the New Testament. Even more interesting Jude or Judas might have been the brother of Jesus.  Jude might have had access to more insight about Enoch threw Jesus.

Here is what I find intriguing. In Genesis 5:24 and Hebrews 11:5 Enoch walks with God and is no more, because God took him away. He didn’t die and is now . . . ?
This one is a little hard for my tiny brain to comprehend so I need to look for some more information to help me better understand this.

According to The New Bible Dictionary, Third Edition Enoch was a man of outstanding sanctity who enjoyed close fellowship with God (for the expression ‘walked with God’) Like Elijah he was received into the presence of God without dying.
It is Probable that the language of Psalm 49:15; 73:24 reflects the story of Enoch. In that case the example of Enoch’s assumption played a part in the origin of Jewish hope for life with God beyond death. (In the Apocrypha, Wisdom 4:10-14 also treats Enoch as the outstanding example of the righteous man’s hope of eternal life.)
In the NT, Heb. 11:5. attributes Enoch’s assumption to his faith; the expression ‘pleased God’ is the translation of ‘walked with God’. [here is where it gets interesting]
Jude 14 quotes a prophecy attributed to Enoch in 1 Enoch 1:9
Let’s stop for a moment… Ok too much thinking my brain hurts. Now there is a Book of Enoch? If this book that Jude quoted is so important why is it not in the Bible we read today? Enoch was a prophet just like Moses, Jeremiah, Isaiah, ext. Enoch writings are just as inspired by God as all the other 66 books in the Bible because according to Genesis 5:24, Hebrews 11:5 “he walked with and pleased God” the book isn’t there but yet God was pleased with Enoch. Contradiction, I think so! Finally, The book of Enoch with 108 chapters can be read, found in Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament.  But I am still skeptical about the books authenticity.
Back to The New Bible Dictionary.
In the interestamental period Enoch became a popular figure according to Gen 5:24, Heb 11:5, Jubilees 4.14–26; 10:17; and 1 Enoch. Probably the legend of Enoch was elaborated in the Babylonian diaspora as a counterpart to the antediluvian sages of Mesopotamian legend. So Enoch became the initiator of the art of writing and the first wise man, who received heavenly revelations of the secrets of the universe and transmitted them in writing to later generations.
In the earlier tradition his scientific wisdom is prominent, acquired on journeys through the heavens with angelic guides, and including astronomical, cosmographical and meteorological lore, as well as the solar calendar used at Qumran. He was also God’s prophet against the fallen angels. Later tradition (2nd century bc) emphasizes his ethical teaching and especially his apocalyptic revelations of the course of world history down to the last judgment. In the Similitudes (1 Enoch 37–71) he is identified with the Messianic Son of man (71:14–17), and some later Jewish traditions identified him with the nearly divine figure Metatron (2, Gn. 5:24; 3 Enoch). Early Christian apocalyptic writings frequently expect his return to earth with Elijah before the End.
1 Enoch (Ethiopic Enoch) is among the most important intertestamental works. The complete text survives only in Ethiopic, but sections are extant in Greek and important fragments of the original Aramaic are now available from Qumran. 1 Enoch comprises five books: the Book of Watchers (1–36), the Similitudes (37–71), the Astronomical Book (72–82), the Book of Dreams (83–90) and the Epistle of Enoch (91–105). The Qumran mss include fragments of all these except the Similitudes, which are therefore now generally dated no earlier than the 1st century ad. Also from Qumran there are fragments of a hitherto almost unknown Book of Giants, which was probably the original fifth book of the Enoch Pentateuch, for which the Similitudes were later substituted.
The Qumran manuscripts help clarify the dates of these works. The oldest sections are the Astronomical Book and 6–19: these date from no later than the beginning of the 2nd century bc and may be as early as the 5th century. The Book of Watchers (incorporating 6–19) cannot be later than the mid-1st and is probably from the mid-3rd century bc. The Book of Dreams is from 165 or 164 bc. The Epistle of Enoch and Book of Giants may date from the end of the 2nd century bc.
Other works under the name of Enoch are from the Christian era. The Similitudes (1 Enoch 37–71) (important as perhaps illustrating the background to the use of ‘Son of man’ in the Gospels) seem to be a Jewish work, though some argue for Christian origin. 3 Enoch (Hebrew Enoch) is a Jewish work of disputed date. 2 Enoch (Slavonic Enoch) is a late Christian work which may incorporate Jewish material.
Bibliography. R. H. Charles, The Book of Enoch, 1912; P. Grelot, Recherches de Science Religieuse 46, 1958, pp. 5–26, 181–210; J. T. Milik, The Books of Enoch: Aramaic Fragments from Qumrân Cave 4, 1976.

Ok so 1 Enoch has 5 books within it

The Book of Enoch
1.    The Book of Watchers (1–36)
                  Who are the “Watchers”?

2.    The Astronomical Book (72–82)
This sounds like something to do with astronomy or astral
   projection.

3.    The Book of Dreams (83–90)
As Neo once said, “Whoa!”

4.    The Epistle of Enoch (91–105)
In the New Testament The Epistles were letters? This might be a Letter to us…?

5.    The Book of Giants (unknown)
The only thing I can say here is Genesis 6:4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

In conclusion Enoch and his books remain a mystery…
